Our journey began two years ago when our son was diagnosed with anaphylaxis to dairy products, which is a life threatening allergy. As my husband and I were avid dairy eaters (think ice-cream, milk, cheese!!) we found it quite challenging at the start. Now we have a great array of dairy free meals, drinks and snacks. We thought it might be useful to people who have just found out that they have to be dairy free, or for people who have been dairy free for a while but are looking for new ideas, to share our recipes and food ideas so they can see that there are lots of great alternatives.
If other people have particular dairy free food items or recipes that they love please post them with a reference).
For clarification, this blog is intended for people suffering from dairy allergies only and who cannot substitute other animal products (goats and sheep cheese etc).
If you still in the process of determining if you have an allergy and looking for treatment options please refer to the Allergy New Zealand website for further information and guidance (www.allergy.org.nz).
I have put some products on the blog – please always check the labels yourself as manufacturers can change ingredients. Also, products recommended on this blog may have the statement “may contain traces of dairy” – if you do not tolerate products with this statement please be sure to check all products recommended. We are based in Auckland, New Zealand so our product references relate to local stores.
If you are new to preparing dairy free food safely it is pretty straight forward. Just remember the basic hygiene rules of ensuring the bench is clean and utensils and cooking equipment are clean. Double check all the ingredients you are using by reading the labels to ensure they are dairy free (you would be suprised what has dairy in it e.g. salt and vinegar chips, some types of wine). Also, make sure they haven’t been contaminated with dairy (i.e. a buttery knife into some jam). Then go for it! Store the food appropriately so it can’t be contaminated (i.e. plastic containers in the fridge away from the milk).
Anyway, I hope this is of use and look forward to hearing your comments.
